MEET THE TEACHERS -
MARTHA FLAHERTY &
BEV  ILLAUQ

Martha Flaherty belongs to one of the families that were relocated from Nunavik to Ellesmere Island in the 1960’s.  Growing up traditionally in a family that was closely connected to the land, Martha learned at an early age to sew, prepare food and hunt.  She also attended English school and eventually went on to attend Thebacha College in Fort Smith for Nursing,  and Carleton University for certification in Teaching a Foreign Language and Journalism.  Because of her excellent communication and interpretation skills Martha has held many paying and honorary positions both across our country and internationally as an Indigenous women’s  leader, an advocate, and a translator.  Martha’s passion for both learning and teaching Inuktitut, and for brokering reconciliation between Inuit, Qallunaat and First Nations peoples in particular, make her teaching entertaining as well as informative.

Beverly Illauq B.A, B.Ed, RTLM is an educator and counsellor with 35 years of work experience in a variety of positions in schools and grass roots businesses.  A mother and grandmother of an Inuit family, Bev lived and worked in Qikiqtaaluk  (Baffin Island) for 20 years and became  the founding Director of Ilisaqsivik Family Resource Centre in Clyde River in 1996.   Bev works from a broad base of both experiential and academic learning in a number of fields that include education, community development and counselling.  Presently Bev is working as a substitute teacher, a writer and a speaker, advocating strongly for healing reconciliation between Indigenous and non-indigenous Canadians.

Martha Flaherty and Beverly (Howard) Illauq began working together on Inuktitut magazine in 1979 and continue to enjoy collaborating as Inuit culture and language instructors for InuktitutNG.
